There are two different weight maps created with a tree. The first one is based on segment numbers (for leaves creation, advanced texturing etc.) and the second one is based on branches thickness (for easy animation, bending, twisting etc.)

Weight map used for advanced texturing. Two textured blended with gradient based on a weightmap.

In this example another weight map was used (based on branches thickness).
